Canada Summer Jobs 2019 is an initiative of the Summer Work Experience program. It provides wage subsidies to employers to create employment and summer job opportunities for youth and students. Companies may receive up to 50%-100% in wage subsidies.

Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years.

What’s New?

Expanded eligibility: to include all youth between the ages of 15-30 who are legally entitled to work in Canada – not just students.

Updated eligibility criteria: the eligibility criteria have been updated to set out what is and isn’t eligible for funding.

Better job matching and easier hiring: All positions will be posted on Job Bank Canada and on the app, to get the word out and help match young people with employers and good quality jobs.

These changes have been made to complement the Government’s renewal of the Youth Employment Strategy, announced in Budget 2018.

The program objectives have been updated to:

  • Provide quality work experiences for youth;
  • Respond to national and local priorities to improve access to the labour market for youth who face unique barriers; and,
  • Provide opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Eligible Employers:

Non-For-Profit organizations; public sector employers; and private sector employers with 50 or fewer full-time employees across Canada. Full-time employees are those working 30 hours or more per week with the employer.

The criteria to assess the proposals focus on:

  • Jobs that support local priorities;
  • Jobs that provide career-related experience or early work experience;
  • Employers who provide supervision and mentoring; a safe work environment and service to local communities;
  • Jobs that provide a salary above the provincial or territorial minimum wage.

Automotive Supplier Competitiveness Improvement Program (ASCIP)

 

The partnership between the Automotive Parts Manufacturer’s Association (APMA), the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) and the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Growth (MEDG) supports the auto parts sector in adopting industry leading software, hardware and/or provide training to improve processes and increase the competitiveness of the industry in Ontario. Intake period is accepting applications as of now until November 28, 2018.

Who Qualifies:

Automotive Suppliers

  • Small and medium sized Ontario-based enterprises (firms with either fewer than 500 employees globally or global revenues of less than $1 billion)
  • Larger firms are eligible, but must partner with at least one Ontario-based small and medium-sized enterprise
  • At least 50 per cent of the firm’s total sales revenue must come from auto supply sector

 

Eligible Project: Stream 2 – Mentorship Pilot Program:

  • Eligible projects must focus on operational efficiency and competitiveness improvements. Adoption of advanced IT technologies may be included as part of the project overall scope.

 

  • Stream 2 will provide grants to Ontario-based small and medium-sized auto parts supplier firms that conduct projects to improve operational efficiency and competitiveness through the organizational adoption of lean manufacturing practices.

 

  • The mentors will be automotive industry experts with background and expertise in lean manufacturing process efficiency to assist suppliers with specific business development needs.  They will be identified in collaboration between the Applicant Company and APMA, and matched based on project outcomes and overall company goals.

 

  • The services provided by the mentor will qualify as an eligible cost for selected projects. OCE will contract with a company and reimburse up to 50 per cent of the total eligible project costs, or up to $100,000 per project, whichever is lower, with the company funding the remainder with matching cash contributions.

YLA supports training related to the adoption of innovative processes, procedures and tools that ultimately lead to business growth (especially export growth) and global competitive position.

Yves Landry AIME (Achieving Innovation and Manufacturing Excellence) typically receives annual funding in the mid-winter of each year. Recent annual funding amounts average $4.85 million. YLA is only accepting statements of interest as of now and the application will open shortly after.

Who Qualifies:

  • Manufacturers producing tangible goods for sale in Ontario and elsewhere
  • 10-1000 full-time employees in FedDev Region
  • 10-500 full-time employees in FedNor Region
  • At least 3 years of operation in Ontario with at least 3 years solid financial footing (this will be verified through provision of financial statements with application)
  • Training related to jobs located in Ontario

Eligible Activities:

Objective 1

Training that will support the adaptation of new technology, new processes or procedures or a change within the company to support innovation. This objective must clearly be linked to innovations leading to growth or competitiveness including expanding into new domestic or international markets.

Objective 2

Training that will support and develop Highly Skilled Personnel in any area that leads to innovation. This can include the development of new engineering skills, training in the use of new software, hardware or other tools necessary to support innovation; retraining to embrace new technologies, new manufacturing methods, or any other business area that will make a manufacturing company more competitive in the global marketplace.

The Canadian Government offers the Youth Employment Strategy program to help young Canadians (aged 15 to 30) obtain career information, develop skills, find jobs and stay employed. Through federal departments and agencies, among others, the Youth Employment Strategy assists employers in hiring young Canadians.

The NRC (IRAP) provides small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with financial assistance to hire young talent under this Youth Employment Strategy Program. This program also facilitates the transition of highly skilled young people to a rapidly changing labour market.

Funding Type:

SMEs will receive a financial contribution geared towards supporting a portion of the salary costs of a youth candidate, who will work on technical opportunities within the firm and on non-technical but technology-related projects.

Who Qualifies?

IRAP provides firms with funding under two different Youth programs: the Youth Employment Program (YEP) and the Youth Employment Program – Green (Youth-Green) program.

Firms

To be eligible for financial assistance under either of IRAP’s Youth programs, your small and medium-sized enterprise must:

  • be incorporated and for-profit;
  • have 500 or less full-time equivalents; and
  • be ready to enhance their innovation capacity, and willing to establish a trusting relationship with IRAP

Youth Employment Program

Graduate Eligibility:

  • Between 15 – 30 years of age (inclusive)
  • A post-secondary graduate
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
  • A first-time participant in a Youth Employment Strategy work experience program targeted at post-secondary graduates
  • Internships are available anywhere in Canada and must last a minimum of six months, and a maximum of twelve months

Youth-Green

Youth Eligibility:

  • Between 15 – 30 years of age (inclusive)
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
  • A first-time participant in a Youth Employment Strategy work experience program targeted at youth
  • Internships are available anywhere in Canada and must last for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months

Green Criteria:

  • To be considered “Green,” one of the following criteria is required:
    • Does the nature of your business align with green economy sectors or industries?
    • Is the Youth internship expected to produce an environmental benefit?

Eligible Activities:

  • research and development, engineering, and multimedia;
  • development of new products and processes;
  • market analysis for a new technology-based product;
  • business development related to science and technology activities; and
  • improvement of customer services, etc.
