In an effort to boost the competitiveness of Ontario’s automotive industry, the Automotive Supplier Competitiveness Improvement Program (ASCIP) has introduced Stream 2 – the Mentorship Pilot Program. This initiative, a collaboration between the Automotive Parts Manufacturer’s Association (APMA), the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), and the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Growth (MEDG), aims to support the auto parts sector by facilitating the adoption of industry-leading software, hardware, and training. This article outlines the eligibility criteria, the scope of eligible projects, and the benefits of the mentorship program.
Eligibility Criteria
Who Qualifies? The program is designed to assist automotive suppliers, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based in Ontario.
To qualify:
- Enterprises must have fewer than 500 employees globally or global revenues of less than $1 billion.
- Larger firms can also participate, but they must partner with at least one Ontario-based SME.
- At least 50% of the firm’s total sales revenue must come from the auto supply sector.
Eligible Projects: Stream 2 – Mentorship Pilot Program Projects eligible for this program must concentrate on enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness. This can include the adoption of advanced IT technologies as part of the project’s overall scope.
Stream 2 Specifics The Mentorship Pilot Program aims to provide grants to Ontario-based SMEs in the auto parts supply sector. These grants support projects that improve operational efficiency and competitiveness through the adoption of lean manufacturing practices.
Mentorship and Expertise Mentors in this program will be automotive industry experts with extensive backgrounds in lean manufacturing process efficiency. These mentors will work closely with suppliers to address specific business development needs. The mentors are identified in collaboration between the applicant company and APMA and are matched based on the project outcomes and the overall company goals.
Funding and Support The program offers financial support by covering up to 50% of the total eligible project costs, or up to $100,000 per project, whichever is lower. The remaining costs must be funded by the company with matching cash contributions. The services provided by the mentor qualify as an eligible cost for the selected projects, and OCE will contract with the company to facilitate reimbursement.
The ASCIP Stream 2 Mentorship Pilot Program represents a significant opportunity for Ontario-based automotive suppliers to enhance their competitiveness through expert guidance and financial support. By adopting advanced manufacturing practices and improving operational efficiency, participating firms can strengthen their market position and drive growth in Ontario’s automotive sector.
