Enhancing Automotive Supplier Competitiveness: ASCIP’s Second Round of Intake

The Automotive Supplier Competitiveness Improvement Program (ASCIP) is poised for its second round of intake, aiming to bolster the capabilities of Ontario-based small and medium-sized automotive suppliers. Supported by the Automotive Parts Manufacturer’s Association (APMA), the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), and the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Growth (MEDG), ASCIP focuses on fostering innovation and productivity to strengthen competitiveness in Ontario’s auto parts sector.

Program Overview

ASCIP endeavors to enhance supplier sourcing capabilities while facilitating innovation and productivity initiatives. This initiative is crucial for Ontario’s automotive sector, enabling companies to become more agile, responsive to market changes, and adept at seizing new business opportunities.

Program Objectives

The primary goal of ASCIP is to empower suppliers to streamline design cycles, improve responsiveness to market dynamics, and capitalize on emerging business prospects. By promoting the adoption of cutting-edge software, hardware, and IT solutions, ASCIP supports companies in efficiently managing product lifecycles and enhancing cost-effectiveness.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible participants include small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based in Ontario, with fewer than 500 employees globally or global revenues under $1 billion. Larger firms can also participate but must collaborate with at least one Ontario-based SME. Moreover, at least 50% of the firm’s total sales revenue must originate from the auto supply sector.

Project Streams

Stream 1 – Technology Adoption: This stream focuses on advancing product lifecycle management and improving competitiveness through the integration of advanced IT technologies. Eligible projects can receive grants covering up to 50% of total project costs, or up to $100,000 per project, with matched cash contributions required from the company.

Stream 2 – Mentorship Pilot Program: Designed to enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness, this stream encourages the adoption of lean manufacturing practices. Eligible projects can also incorporate advanced IT technologies. Mentors, selected for their expertise in lean manufacturing, will assist companies in achieving specific business development goals.

Funding and Support

OCE plays a pivotal role in administering grants, reimbursing eligible project costs, and fostering collaboration between industry experts and applicant companies. The APMA complements these efforts by promoting ASCIP among its members and aiding in the development of project proposals.

Eligible Expenditures

The program covers a range of expenses crucial for project implementation, including domestic travel and living costs, salaries and benefits, and operating expenses such as hardware and software implementation, and direct materials.

Conclusion

ASCIP’s second round of intake presents a valuable opportunity for Ontario-based automotive suppliers to enhance their competitive edge through innovation and operational efficiency. By leveraging advanced technologies and expert mentorship, participating companies can optimize their processes, strengthen market positions, and contribute to the growth of Ontario’s auto parts sector. For SMEs looking to innovate and expand, ASCIP stands as a strategic initiative supported by industry leaders and governmental bodies committed to driving economic growth and industrial advancement in Ontario.
